Black Forest Brain-Boosting Smoothie

  • Servings: 1
  • Ready In: 5 minutes

Ingredients

  • 1 banana, frozen
  • 1/2 cup almond milk
  • 1/2 cup cherries, pitted
  • 1 tablespoon cocoa powder
  • 1 tablespoon lucuma powder
  • 1 tablespoon grated dark chocolate

Health Benefits

  • Bananas: known for their potassium content, they are also packed with fiber to help you feel fuller, longer, and when frozen and used in a healthy smoothie, they create a creamy and smooth texture. In this brain-boosting smoothie, the humble banana’s vitamin B6, vitamin C, and tryptophan may improve mood, decrease stress, and preserve memory.

  • Almond milk: is nutritious, low in calories, dairy-free, and may help reduce your risk for heart disease. For those who are lactose intolerant or vegan, almond milk is the perfect complement to a healthy treat.

  • Cherries: a favorite summer-time fruit, cherries exhibit antioxidant activity, anti-inflammatory compounds, and taste great. According to a study conducted by the Oregon Health & Science University, tart cherries consumed 7 days prior to a strenuous running event can minimize muscle pain.

  • Cocoa and dark chocolate: are rich in flavanols, unlike their cousin, milk chocolate. In fact, according to Harvard Medical school, flavanols are linked with improved cognitive functioning. A variety of clinical trials have found that cocoa flavanol consumption is related to better attention, function, and memory.

  • Lucuma: this natural, low GI sweetener is rich in antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals. This exotic tropical fruit is dehydrated into a powder that preserves its nutrient profile, and can then be used to create healthy smoothies and other recipes.
